In the next age, try naming your troops as you purchase them according to the names of the Norse Runes (or Tarot cards, or zodiac signs).
As they are injured or killed, pretend this provides messages from the Gods, or the Church, or what-have-you.
At the end of an Age, any survivors can be "interpreted" as the outcome of the "reading" or "casting."
The rune names are as follows:
Fehu, Uruz, Thurisaz, Ansuz, Raidho, Kenaz, Gebo, Wunjo Hagalaz, Naudhiz, Isa, Jera, Eihwas, Perthro, Elhaz, Sowilo Tiwa, Berkano, Ehwas, Mannaz, Laguz, Ingwaz, Dagaz, Othala
Captured troops might be "read" as "inverted" runes or cards.
Just two cents worth of the very silly…

nice idea tiresias, I will do that I'm a fan of fantasybooks (most known = LotR, but there are many many others, some even better imo) and I've been using the names in those books for my soldiers so far, but next age I'll do it your way tiresias
