Make the alliance which has done best the "winner" of the age and not the country which ended on spot number 1.
If you're an ally with someone and you're the only one on the world it's peace and not only your good ally has won but also you who helped them.

No because the alliance isn't part of the game mechanics(I know that alliances obviously happen in game) but nations are the in game mechanism so the #1 nation should be recognized otherwise this power block crap, that ruined it for so many this age, is encouraged instead of independent thinking about the best for the nation instead of someone else and an 'alliance'.

Vincenet can name a country as the winner but that doesn't mean the rest of us actually think it is

Vincenet can name a country as the winner but that doesn't mean the rest of us actually think it is The winner of Age 4 is: Tripolitania. ;D Some may be thinking they don't but some do they did.

...
i think pissing everyone off so they kill you doesn't make you the winner.
i'll admit, they were impressive, but who wouldn't be impressive with a huge active core?

If they had made some friends along the way they'd likely still be alive today, but as was said they pissed too many people off which = death

I agree with Petro. Vincent clearly stated that the large alliance spoiled the fun for most players, and they certainly would not be winners. So there are two options in my opinion: Australia, because they are still on the map, and had some allies at certain times, or Tripolitana.
Both have survived extremely hard times. In my opinion the winner is Tripolitana, because they had to face 6 enemies, and Australia has faced 2 at a time max. Let's vote here: Should Australia or Tripolitana be declared the winner?

India as they survived pretty much the longest with limited friends/allies.

India was impressive. On the other hand they only survived longer because first Ukraine and Sweden were being killed. Their turn simply came later. A lot of Tripolitanas went to India, but their performance wasn't as impressive as in their home country. So I still agree with Petro.

if it's the alliance that wins then by the current rules everyone could win on day 1... and since it's getting more and more in that direction I think making the alliance win if there are no limits to how many people can be in that alliance is a bad thing.
So it's simply the number 1 country at the end of the age that wins. Whatever alliances they were in, they are the ones that managed to impose their ruling on the largest territory. Maybe the previous ages this was not always the strongest country, but if it's clearly the winning objective then the one who lays hold on the largest territory really is the best country.
Next age there is gonna be a slightly different rating, though I haven't figured out exactly how, LOL

Honestly, neither India nor Tripolitania deserve to win because they are both dead. If they were truly the best, they'd still be alive.

The winner would be different for all people
It yust depends on how you rate the countries
Few examples: -Most provinces -Most players in top 10/50/100 -Highest overall ranking -Most gold in total -Strongest main army -Biggest on-line force -The country you wouldnt dare attack with only 1 country -The country that survived for long time against all odds
And you can make up many more

up until age four the number one objective of the game was having the number 1 spot on the rankings. having most cities was the most important thing for a high ranking. so age 2: ottoman won, age3: transylvania won: age 4: we'll see at 19:00, probably denmark. it's as clear as that. the allies of the winning countries didn't win the game. maybe some of them are just happy that they survived, but still the nation at the number 1 spot played the best game. just fight them if you want to win, instead of just becoming an ally and declaring that "the alliance has won". if people only tried to win, the entire big alliance discussion wouldn't have been there this age.
